It has to be said that Thiago Silva’s time at Chelsea has been incredible. When the Brazilian defender left Paris Saint-Germain shortly after losing the Uefa Champions League final with the Paris club, he moved to the west London club with many claiming he was just there to pass time until the end of his career.
But contrary to those claims, Thiago has been a sensational signing for Chelsea. In his very first season, he won the Uefa Champions League title that has eluded him all his career and went on to add the Uefa Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup months later.
At 38 years old, he is still going strong for the club and is undoubtedly the best defender at Chelsea and even arguably in the whole of the Premier League.
Do not get me wrong. This is a personal opinion and I admit and recognise Thiago Silva as a legend of football for everything he’s done throughout his career, but in terms of Chelsea, he isn’t a club legend yet.
Being a legend takes more than having a brilliant career at a club. There is no doubt he will be considered as a great player for Chelsea but when you hear the word legend, you think about the likes of Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Peter Cech, Eden Hazard and the likes.
To be a legend of a club, you have to have been a key part of a team that dominated over a considerably period of time. Chelsea haven’t done that with Thiago so for me, he hasn’t gotten to this level at the club.
He hasn’t been successful in winning the league title or any of the English domestic cups since he joined. His only success came in that 2021 European success.
Unless he is able to win the English Premier League and maybe one domestic cup, there is always going to be debate as regards this topic and for me, I’ll always maintain that as magnificent as he’s been for Chelsea, he isn’t a legend of the club.
